I was reading a blog post where the author wanted to use the following Gemara. Reb Meir continued to learn from his Rebbe Acher even after he went off and said he was taking the good left in his Rebbe and threw away the rest.

Would that be an appropriate method to use nowadays on a person who is now a person who we cannot learn from anymore but yet still retains all his skills from before and is willing to share them even after his new status?

I would say that so long as there is any chance of yourself being persuaded to the bad, then one musnt do it. If the mentor turned into a heretic then he will likely cause you to question your own allegiance to Yiddishkeit. Such a thing only Reb Meir was strong enough to fight. However if the Rov was Chutzpadik or something or was Mechallel Shabbos then why shouldnt the same rule apply. I am looking for a source though.
