Would I be allowed to have a Shabbat dinner on a outside (backyard) patio? I only ask this because I've never seen it done, and wonder if it can be done. Thanks.

Besides for the eiruv issue you must also be careful if there is dirt, grass or plants that nothing spills (liquid) or gets planted (pits).

Shulchun Uruch Oruch Chayum 273 seef 7 explicitly permits saying kidish in the chutzair instead of the bayus.

make sure to wash nettilas yadaim over there as well, as changing places after kiddush is problematic.
