Bum in yeshiva Or IDF?

We all know what's going on in Israel right now with the government wanting to draft yeshiva bachurim into the army Rachmana nitzlan. My question is, there are so many bachurim who are "officially" in yeshiva, but are sitting in their rooms all day watching movies or in internet cafes. Don't you think it would be a good idea for these boys to go to the army. Maybe it would knock some sense into them and help them mature.

Of course if these boys are learning for at least a short time a day, serious learning, they should stay in yeshiva. I'm talking about the kind who don't know what the beis hamidrash looks like. The rule should be 'If you're not learning you have to serve. There is a wonderful nachal chareidi where the boys daven, learn and have a structure.

I would love to hear your opinions on the matter.

The problem is that many of these boys who are "bumming around" are already headed in a downward spiral. If they do go to the army, they usually go to a mainstream unit. Why? And then when they do go OTD, observers say, "See! The army made him lose his frumkeit." Never mind that he was already on that path, nebach.

3   thats very true, it reminds me of the people who say that Diet Coke makes you fat because you always see fat people drinking it. Here as well if you send the bums to the army of course some will go worse!! +1 - Oiker HarimJul 17  '12 at 16:21

The obvious teretz is, that the serious bums should definately be doing something with their lives. However the army is not always the best solution. There is no 'one answer fits all' over here. While plenty of guys have actually been knocked into shape by serving, there are plenty that continued on their downward path, straying away from yiddishkeit even more. each person must ask their daas torah who knows them personaly. While many may recieve the answer to go and conscript, many wont! By the way the Nachal Hachareidi has long lost it 'shem' of being for the frum guys. The worst of the worst goes on there, (even though it is a totally segrargated unit) so much so that the army wants to rename the unit to a name withouth the word Chareidi in it! Often people do much better in the regular units where they are looked up to as the so called 'Rabbi' of the group, and therefore have to set some sort of example for the rest of them. (yes this is true even in some of the viruntly anti-chareidi units) Those who are told not to serve, should pull ther socks up and get working.

2   No. He is obviously not in the know. I, however, am. My neighbors and friends have sent sons to Nachal Chareidi, and I've observed that they came out with beautiful midos and have kept their yiras shomayim. One of them was explaining to me that when they are made to hike, carrying 40 kilos on their back, and then are given short periods to rest, they take turns trading divrei Torah. Now that's mesiros nefesh. - Aloh NaalehJul 17  '12 at 16:12

2   @AlohNaaleh perhaps he miss-heard and really the army are leaving out the word Nachal and just keeping Chareidi! I agree with you - Oiker HarimJul 17  '12 at 16:23

1   And where did you here that the army wants to change the name by removing "chareidi" from it? On the contrary! The army wants to create additional units for Nachal Chareidi. - Aloh NaalehJul 17  '12 at 16:15
