The Gemoro is full of stories of Tannaim and Amoiroim who had very hard nisyoinas with Arayos. Let me quote one Gemoro in particular Succah 52 Amud Aleph near the bottom:

Abaye heard a man say to a strange woman let us journey together. Abaye said to himself I will follow them to stop them doing an aveirah. When they came to a crossroad he overheard them saying that they really enjoy each others company but now thier paths differ. Abaye said to himself had it been me I would have been Oiver! Abaye was very distraught until an old man taught him, 'Whoever is greater then his friend, so too his Yetzer Hora is too'. Abaye was then at peace because he understood it was his high level that would make the nisayon so hard.

I cant help but feel that nowadays we dont see this anymore. Can anyone imagine Gedolim [Chas Vesholom] going off with strange women anymore or walking into an internet cafe even if no-one would know?

Rashbam in Bava Basra 110b states quite clearly that if the stain on the talmid chochom's clothes is caused by his working to make an honest living not only is it not a chillul HaShem, it is indeed is kiddush HaShem

There is a very long explanation given by R'Dessler in Michtav Meieliyahu on peshat of 'Kol Hagodal Meichavero Yitzroi Godel memenu'.I think if we understand the deeper meaning we could suggest our Gedilim are in a similar state. With the greatest respect Who's to say The Gedolim don't have Taavos, maybe not taavos like us or maybe yes,are you going to ask them? Im a big big Gadol and I testify that it just 'ain't easy'!

Perhaps nowadays the Chilul Hashem would be too great and therefore God stops this from happening.

and then not? It's a chilul hashem for them to go with a stain on their shirt and not this? - Joe ShmoeJul 13  '12 at 03:03

a stain is their fault, they can do something about it. However people understood in the olden days that the Yetzer Hora is stronger when you are greater. Nowadays we wouldnt understand this! - Yehuda HaMaccabiJul 13  '12 at 08:23
