If tanach is replete with reshaim who were gedolia yisrael (zimrei, doeg, korach, abshalom to name just a few) why are we so certain that this is no longer the case in our later generations?

why are you sure it is no longer the case if some one would have embarrassed doag before he was exposed for who he is he would over been a mevaza Talmid Chacham, just because they are wicked does not mean that they are not the gedolie hador. we no longer have navuah and have no garuntee that the are true tzadikim but that is not our business we are mechuiv to be mechabed Talmeidia chachamim not tzadikim!!

The percentage of Gedolim who went bad is extremely low. Therefor we do not expect it to happen. Also, we need other Gedolim to tell us that those have gone off the derech!
1 i have not went through tanach to get an exact % but it is not a low ratio my guess would be 1 in 4. also have you ever heard of a trei utrei and please do not tell me that every berel and shmerel should decide who is the biggest and is therefore right - judaJul 12 '12 at 20:22
