2   Do you mean whistling in tune? Surely whistling to call someone must be OK? - Yehuda HaMaccabiJul 25  '12 at 19:13

The Rema in OC338 discusses whether whistling is permitted on Shabbos, which would indicate that it's not problematic at other times.

4   My Rebbe once told me that The Rema is only speaking about the Hilchos Shabbos, I told him then he should speak about Hilchos Meat and Milk and give milk and Pork as an example! +1 - Old WineJul 25  '12 at 18:55

4   The Rema seems to be discussing calling someone but the Magen Avraham says that whistling in tune is also included. - dashJul 25  '12 at 19:24

My father עליו השלום used to say א גוי פייפט. From which I inferred that א ייד פייט נישט. But הלכה is not based on pithy sayings, otherwise we could all have an affair with a non Jewish woman based on מיט א שיקצה מעיגט מאן

In Sefer Shmiras Shabbos Kihilchasoi it says clearly that whistling is Muttar on Shabbos - In the Alta Heim, however it seems that whistling was considered not tznius, inappropriate and not shabbasdike
