The Gemoro relates two stories. One of them is that Reb Yochanon was arguing with his talmid and brother in law Reish Lakish (who had married his sister) about weapons. When Reish Lakish said a phyiscal fact about when weapons are ready for use, Reb Yochanon told him 'A ganov knows his weapons'. This reference was going back to the days when Reish Lakish was chief robber and had not yet done Teshuva. Reish Lakish replied to Reb Yochanon 'and what differnece did it make, now they (the Bnei Hayeshiva) call me Leader and then they (the other robbers) called me Leader'. When Reb Yochanon heard that he was terribly distraught and Reish Lakish fell deathly ill as a punishment. When Reish Lakish's wife came to her brother Reb Yochanon to beg for her husbands life, he said that Hashem will console her. After Reish Lakish was niftar, Reb Yochanon missed him so much that he went crazy and in the end, the Chachamim prayed that he too should pass on and so it was.
Now for the second story years before that. Rav Cahana was forced to flee Bavel for killing a Moiser and went to learn by Reb Yoichanon. He asked such good questions that Reb Yochanon wanted to see him properly. Rav Cahana had a split lip and it looked as though he were smiling at his good fortune that he had managed to catch Reb Yochanon out. When Reb Yochanan saw this, he was terribly distraught, and Rav Cahana died. When Reb Yochanan was informed that it was a mistake and his was just that his lips were crooked, he went to the Kever of Rav Cahana. After admitting that Rav Cahana was his rebbe, he woke Rav Cahana up.
Now for my question. If he had the power to wake people up from the dead, then instead of going crazy from the lack of a Chavrusa, why didn't he wake Reish Lakish up and learn with him again?
